Elphaba Thropp, often known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is a misunderstood, powerful, and passionate young woman. She is a victim of prejudice and circumstance rather than the villain depicted in The Wizard of Oz. Elphaba’s journey is one of defiance, self-discovery, and unyielding commitment to justice.
History
Elphaba is born with green skin due to her mother’s consumption of a magical elixir while pregnant. Her father, Frex, a devout and emotionally distant man, blames her for the family's hardships, compounding her feelings of isolation.
Elphaba grows up overshadowed by her younger sister, Nessarose, who is physically disabled and receives most of their father's attention. Despite this, Elphaba cares deeply for Nessarose, often acting as her protector.
At Shiz University, Elphaba is initially an outcast due to her green skin and strong personality. Her unexpected friendship with Glinda and her discovery of her magical talents mark pivotal moments in her life.
Elphaba’s moral compass leads her to oppose the Wizard’s corrupt regime, setting her on a path of rebellion that ultimately paints her as a villain in the eyes of Oz. Her defiance, love for Fiyero, and devotion to doing what’s right drive her.
Alignment
Elphaba is aligned with good, though she is often mischaracterized as evil. Her actions, while controversial, are rooted in her desire to protect the oppressed and expose injustice, even at great personal cost.
Personality
Elphaba is fiercely intelligent, principled, and passionate. She has a sharp wit and an unyielding determination to fight for what she believes is right. Her experiences of prejudice make her empathetic toward others who are marginalized.
However, Elphaba is also stubborn, self-critical, and reluctant to let others in. Her independence and defiance can sometimes alienate those around her, even as they inspire admiration. Despite her strength, she harbors deep insecurities about her appearance and worth.
